Inspiration Station

I designed this section as a way station, a place in which you could stop awhile on your daily rounds to receive and leave with a little inspiration. Inspiration is such a great word and an even greater feeling, don’t you think?

But what is it about inspiration that moves us so? To me, inspiration is what happens when we are simply and truly in touch with our spirit, our inner sense of self – that whispering one who truly guides us.

That sense of self has been called our “gut”, “our heart”, our “instinct”, etc. Where that sense of “self” resides in us isn’t as important to me as what triggers it. I think we become inspired when we witness a beautiful scene of nature, watch someone perform a selfless act, read a passage or poem written from someone’s truth. It occurs, in my opinion, when we are feeling, sharing, giving and receiving spirit - ours or another’s.

I’ve included many of my favorite poems, prayers and quotes here. I invite you to stop awhile, rest, contemplate, breathe in some spirit, then leave refreshed and pass it on!

I led two expert calls for CoachVille’s Personal Environments Community on the prayerful practices I use to keep me inspired. To learn more about these special calls and to listen to the free audio recordings of them , Click here

A Psalm for Life
Tell me not in mournful numbers
Life is but an empty dream!---
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us farther than today.
Art is long and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead
Act,---act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o’erhead!
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us then be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“ I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will met with a success unexpected in common hours.”

- Henry David Thoreau

“ Successful people aren’t people without problems, they are people who have learned to solve their problems.”

- Robert Seashore

“ It’s hard to tell our good luck sometimes. Hard to tell sometimes for many years to come. And most of us have wept copious tears over someone or something, when if we’d understood the situation better, we might have celebrated our good fortune instead…One can never change the past, only the hold it has on you and while nothing in your life is reversible, you can reverse it nevertheless.”

- Merle Shain

“ A heart is judged not by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.”

- Spoken by the Wizard of Oz

I am Love
I am the great loving-kindness of God centered in myself.
I am the awareness of generosity flowing forth to everyone and everything everywhere.
I am the abundance of God bursting forth unreservedly
In my life and in all those with whom I have any contact.
I am a process through whom God enriches the Universe.

- New Moon Booklets by Beverlee Brown

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love,
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal light.

- St. Francis of Assisi

I have a body, but I am not my body.
I have feelings, but I am not my feelings.
I have desires, but I am not my desires.
I have a mind, but I am not my mind.

- Pierro Ferrucci

“Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get;
only with what you are expected to give, which is everything.”

- Katherine Hepburn

“ Lose this day loitering --- twill be the same story
To-morrow---and the next more dilatory;
Each indecision brings its own delays,
And days are lost lamenting o’er lost days.
Are you in earnest? Seize this very minute---
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.
Only engage, and then the mind grows heated---
Begin it, and then the work will be completed.”

- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“ First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.”

- Epictetus

“ I hold it true, what’er befall;
I feel it when I sorrow most;
“ Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

- Alfred, Lord Tennyson

The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it.”

- Marcus Aurelius

“ People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want and, if they don’t find them, make them.”

- George Bernhard Shaw

“Every good thing you do,
every good thing you say,
every good thought you think,
vibrates on and on and never
ceases. The evil remains only
until it is overcome by the good,
but the good remains forever.”

- Peace Pilgrim, a woman who crisscrossed the US carrying only this simple message

“ Most people are searching for happiness outside themselves. That’s a fundamental mistake. Happiness is something that you are and it comes from the way that you think.

- Wayne Dyer

“ Happiness does not depend on outward things, but on the way we see them.”

- Leo Tolstoy

“ Happiness is not an absence of problems, but the ability to deal with them.”

- H. Jackson Brown

“ All days are wonderful in direct proportion to the creative energy invested in them. No investment, no return. Even lousy days possess hidden wonder. Sometimes all you need is a moment of attitude adjustment to shift your perception of an entire afternoon and move forward into a pleasant evening. Days that are expected to be wonderful before they begin turn out to be so much more frequently than days greeted with grumbling…it doesn’t matter whether a day is good or bad. What matters is what we do with it.

- Sarah Ban Breathnach

" There is a law in psychology that if you form a picture in your mind of what you would like to be, and you keep and hold that picture there long enough, you will soon become exactly as you have been thinking."

- William James

“ The mind is everything; what you think you become.”

- Buddha

“ It is a well-known fact that one comes finally to believe whatever one repeats to one’s self, whether the statement be true or false.

- Napoleon Hill

“ Regardless of what language you speak, your intent will manifest through the word. What you dream, what you feel, and what you really are will all be manifested through the word.”

- don Miguel Ruiz

“ The greatest secret to living a happy, fulfilled life is the realization that everything is created in our minds before it manifests itself in the outer world. We must believe it before we can see it.”

- Sarah Ban Breathnach

“If you want to change an external part of your life, then you are first required to change the internal beliefs that hold these patterns in place. If you want others to respond to you or your work in different ways and with more appreciation, then examine your expectations for your work and your efforts. When you believe in yourself, chances are others will find your worth also.”

- Meredith Young-Sowers

" So, I tell you, whatsoever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

-The Holy Bible - Mark 11:24

- Somerset Maugham

“ Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.”

- Helen Keller

“ You were born with potential. You were born with goodness and truth. You were born with ideals and dreams. You were born with greatness. You were born with wings. You’re not meant for crawling, so don’t. You have wings. Learn to use them and to fly.”
